Frequently Asked Questions

F.A.Q.
If I'm not officially accepted yet, what am I allowed to do in the OOC communities?
You are perfectly welcome to ask questions or comment to posts in [community profile] damned_lounge even if you haven't been accepted yet. However, we do not allow potential players to post with journals for characters who have not officially been accepted, and unless otherwise noted, non-players may not vote in any of the administrative polls.

As a potential applicant, what is the best way to contact a mod if I have questions about my application?
We prefer to be emailed at damned.mods[at]gmail[dot]com so that we have a record of the question and having answered it. Leaving a comment on this post is also fine, if you don't mind the question being public.

I've submitted an application, but it's been a while and I haven't heard back. What should I do?
We do our best to list the status of applications in our inbox over here. However, sometimes we do fall behind. If it's been a week and you haven't received a response, please feel free to contact one of the mods (on plurk, with a DW PM, etc.) to inquire about your application status.

...Did my question just get skipped over, or are you ignoring it for a reason?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-02-10 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's all right to make a few educational guesses if you explain how you're making them! We just don't want there to be any major assumptions to be made, so fill in the blanks where you need to (and make sure to note what is fanon and what is clearly stated in canon).

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-02-10 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
So sorry about that! I think we just skipped it by accident. There's a response there now, and sorry again!

[identity profile] meruberri.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm planning on apping at some point this cycle but I think I'm just a little confused at how the game works. Sorry, I'm so dumb. My brain may just be frazzled from midterms but I keep reading through the links and I'm not seeing anything about these.

1. It says adding the character journals are optional. Why? What goes there? It sounds like everything is already taken care of in the comms

2. What's your policy on using an account already active at another game?

[identity profile] meruberri.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Wait never mind! I just found the info about the journals.

but something I haven't been able to find still is what's this "Real" name stuff? What's the point of it? and where does it come from? other than "I made it up! :D"

I feel like I missed a page somewhere. I'm sorry.

Awesome, thank you!

Not a mod, but maybe I can help!

The doctors and nurses are trying to convince the patients that their canon lives are nothing more than delusions, and that they're really supposed to be someone else. That's where the "real" name comes in- it's what the staff calls your character in the narrative.

As for where it comes from, you just kind of make it up, but it can't be the name of some other character from the same canon, or the main character from another canon, etc. Most people just pick something they like, but some take care into choosing specific names for their meanings or other personal attachments. It's pretty neat.

I'm considering apping a character that canonically speaks LIKE THIS

[identity profile] audience-cat.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Bugrit buggrit buggrit millennium hand and shrimp I told 'em preview, I told 'em!
Which is to say, I accidentally pressed submit instead of preview, sorry, here is the rest of the question:

I'm considering apping a character that canonically speaks LIKE THIS, and was wondering if I would still be allowed to use that format when they speak, at least during nightshift?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
The previous poster pretty much got it all correct, but let us know if you still have questions! Sorry if things are confusing. (Also, Tick icon! I approve.)

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that would be fine! A font change isn't a huge deal.

[identity profile] meruberri.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to get lost when things are so organized. Just to double check doubling up journals = good? bad? doesn't matter?
(thanks. except it's actually Nicholas.)

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
We're generally pretty laid back on doubling up with journals so long as you aren't making a lot of journal entries with it for another game. So it should be fine!

(... So it is! This is what I get for responding to comments in the middle of the night.)

Potential applicant here (considering Crona from Soul Eater) with two questions.

1. What is the policy on two characters that share a body? In Crona and Ragnarok's case, it's more "magically conjoined twins" than possession.

2. What is the policy on characters who have not (and most likely will not) have their sex revealed in their canon? Crona is essentially genderless mentally, and I would prefer not to have to pick a sex.

[identity profile] spandexorgtfo.livejournal.com 2011-02-26 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not a mod, but hopefully I can give you a player perspective in the meantime...

Regarding Crona and Ragnarok, I can't say for sure if you're allowed to app them both as a single entity, but if you are able to app them both, one of the things to keep in mind is that for dayshift, the patients are supposed to be normal people, so while Crona and Ragnarok could still share a body, Ragnarok couldn't necessarily emerge during the day, since it wouldn't be "normal". At night, though, I'm sure he can come out and do his thing with appropriate power restrictions and whatnot.

Regarding your second question, I'm pretty sure there's been questions about characters with sort of vague genders before. I think the consensus thus far is that you do need to pick a gender for the sake of determining how the staff will treat them re: showers, dorms, etc. as the Institute is divided ICly between male and female blocks. Doesn't mean that you need to play Crona as the gender you pick, though. It might be helpful also to look at the responses here (http://damned-info.livejournal.com/14653.html?thread=326973#t326973), although I know that the case is not the same as Crona's.

orz hope this helped...! It's quite late, so I apologize for any rambling ;A;

[identity profile] hydok.livejournal.com 2011-02-26 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Re: Crona and Ragnarok, that is what I'd thought about doing, so it's nice to hear a player confirm that.

And thank you a lot for the link, that does help!

[identity profile] agent-popsicle.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I read through most of the comments and didn't see anything to answer my question, but if I missed it a thousand apologies. Also, doing my best not to spoil the game for people who haven't played the series so this might be unclear?

I'm considering applying as Heather Mason from Silent Hill 3, and in the game there are two possible endings. The first ending is considered 'canon' by most people since you get it on your first playthrough no matter what, and the second is only attainable after completing a few extra challenges. Would it be acceptable for me to use the second ending when applying? It does drastically change her personality, which I can explain further if you'd like. I guess I'm just wondering how you define AU characters, since I know some games don't allow it. Is it okay so long as the AU is official?

Does any of this make sense? D:

Hello, me and my friend are interested in joining this game at some point, and we would like to ask about the nature of activity requirements. It was said that there needs to be a post around every two weeks; we were wondering if the same post can count for two or more characters if it's, well, interactive? Or would it count only for the one that makes the first post itself?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If we could get some more info about how different the second ending is, that would be helpful (we aren't scared of spoilers), though from what we're reading here, it sounds like it'd be fine!

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The two week rules counts for each character. Looking at an Activity Check post (http://community.livejournal.com/damned_lounge/2455517.html) might help you understand it better, but if you have any further questions then please ask!

[identity profile] infiniillusion.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that I understand, I was asking if a joint post would count as an activity for both of the characters. XD;; Oh, thank you, that post clears some things up! Although now I still have to ask, does a thread/comment chain counts as an activity or does a new post have to be made?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-03-05 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you referring to thread/comment chains in [livejournal.com profile] damned or thread/comment chains in [livejournal.com profile] damned_bulletin?

If it helps to clarify things: By "posts" we don't mean a literal top post (LJ entry) to [livejournal.com profile] damned; instead, we mean any threading that a player does with their character in [livejournal.com profile] damned. (Damned is structured a little differently from other games in that each LJ entry to the [livejournal.com profile] damned community represents an area that anyone else can also post to, rather than representing one character's single log.) Hope that helps clear things up!

Any, really. X'D

And thanks, that's basically what I was asking, that helps a lot! Thank you! :)

If I recall correctly, the 2nd ending is the bad one, where instead of Heather returning to the "normal world" amusement park with detective pal Douglas, playing a sort of dark joke on him by wielding a knife and acting like she might kill him, and deciding to go back to her original name Cheryl before visiting her father's grave, we instead see her at the Otherworld amusement park (the series' sinister, twisted world where everything is super creepy) where she is standing in front of Douglas' bleeding body while she holds the murder weapon, having apparently been possessed by the demon god thing. It's been a while, but in short, the protagonist goes from happy and optimistic about the future to possibly possessed and definitely a murderer. And probably pretty used to killing things due to all that monster-killing you have to do to get the points to achieve said ending.

That is assuming the above person isn't apping from the super-goofy UFO ending.

I've read most of the information by now, and I have some more questions if you don't mind. :'D

1) no personal belongings/weapons are allowed, right? But what about scissors, can a character keep those plastic-for-art ones? Or maybe try to steal scissors/syringe from a doctors' closet whenever opportunity arises?

2) from what I understand, patients are roomed randomly; however we're interested in bringing in two brothers and they definitely wouldn't react well to being separated ICly (they'd likely be 'related' even by their "real" names, too). Well. Mass hysteria which just never ends for one would be guaranteed. Assuming the doctors are (somewhat) working for the patients' "good", they'd probably want to avoid that, and, haha, yeah. The other option would be sedatives so strong the character can't move or something. We wouldn't mind to display all that onscreen (time for some truly psycho screaming in the asylum's lobby!), but bottom line is, is it possible for them to stay together?

3) "Characters who consciously keep their identity a secret may use their true name or a canon-based alias." In other words, they would believe their actual name is what the Institution lists it, yes? How would they even know their canon name then, or would they not? How would another character from the same canon who remembers them address them?

Thank you and I'm sorry I'm asking this much ;~;
