Frequently Asked Questions

F.A.Q.
If I'm not officially accepted yet, what am I allowed to do in the OOC communities?
You are perfectly welcome to ask questions or comment to posts in [community profile] damned_lounge even if you haven't been accepted yet. However, we do not allow potential players to post with journals for characters who have not officially been accepted, and unless otherwise noted, non-players may not vote in any of the administrative polls.

As a potential applicant, what is the best way to contact a mod if I have questions about my application?
We prefer to be emailed at damned.mods[at]gmail[dot]com so that we have a record of the question and having answered it. Leaving a comment on this post is also fine, if you don't mind the question being public.

I've submitted an application, but it's been a while and I haven't heard back. What should I do?
We do our best to list the status of applications in our inbox over here. However, sometimes we do fall behind. If it's been a week and you haven't received a response, please feel free to contact one of the mods (on plurk, with a DW PM, etc.) to inquire about your application status.

1) Something potentially dangerous like scissors wouldn't be allowed, but a character could try to swipe some from the Arts and Crafts room at night. Or a doctor's office, yes.

2) Our rule for something like this is that we can put them in the same hallway, but characters who are from the same canon can't be in the same room. Hopefully that's a good enough compromise?

3) Oh, it doesn't work like that... The "real" name is just a title that the staff calls them as part of the act that they are, in fact, a mental patient and aren't who they think they are. The character would know their real name and who they are, but that wouldn't stop the staff from calling them something different.

1) Awesome. It would count as institution rule-breaking if someone fount out they have, right?

2) Well, we'll have to think about it. While one would be fine with that the other would probably... kill his roommate? Whoever it is. X_x

3) OH I SEE. Even better in that case.

Thanks!

How do you feel about characters from historical fiction? In particular, this girl here, Oichi from Sengoku BASARA-- her canon is loosely based on actual historical figures and events, but it's all fictional. Some other series like this are Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. Would a canon like this be ok to app from?

Also, I can't write in past tense. It's really difficult for me to stay consistent in that ha...hha...ha... Is present tense acceptable?
vinesofregret: Cho Hakkai from Saiyuki (pic#)

So, quick question on the human-appearance rules. I'm considering apping this guy here, Cho Hakkai, from Saiyuki. He normally looks human, but only because of three limiter ear cuffs he wears - he's a human-turned-youkai, and in youkai form has noticably pointed ears, slitted gold eyes, and moving vine patterns on his body. I know the easy way to deal with this would be to just strip him of his youkai form and it's associated powers (which is... all of his special abilities, basically), but being youkai is kind of... the physical manifestation of some major past trauma and just how totally and completely screwed up he is in the head, so I'd kind of like to keep it, given the premise of the game. Any possible solutions :|a?

[personal profile] thestormishere 2011-04-30 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a mod, but I know there's some characters in-game who are stripped of this or that appearance during the day, and then change during the night again, just like the return of any other power. Only currently in-game example that my sleepy mind can come up with on the spot is Rapunzel, whose hair gets longer at night, but I know there's been others too- I think Kurt from X-Men would turn blue at night?

So basically look pretty human during the day, less so at night?
vinesofregret: Cho Hakkai from Saiyuki - youkai form, looking arrogant ([y] hmph)

[personal profile] vinesofregret 2011-04-30 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that'd work nicely~ Not being able to control the switch just adds extra creepy to it XD

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
So long as the historical figure is a viable character in a fictional series, that should be fine!

I'm afraid that we don't allow present tense. Past tense is the game standard, and we require players to adhere to it in their prose posts for consistency's sake. Sorry about that!

[identity profile] nightmaresound.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ok! I can adapt haha. My sample I sent in is in present tense, should i resend my application with it changed to past or would it be passable as is?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
If we feel that the present tense sample poses a problem to our ability to judge the application, we'll probably e-mail you and let you know to send in a revision for it. Until then, no worries!

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Although what our player said above is true about some characters, I'm not sure if the same would apply to Hakkai due to the fact that he spends the majority of his canon in his "human" form, (while a character like Kurt is permanently "inhuman" in canon, and Rapunzel's change at night is fairly minor).

That said, I think the best solution would be for Hakkai to still have the ear cuffs in-game (as "sentimental jewelry"), or to strip him of his demonic powers altogether. In the case of the former, you'd have to explain/clarify in your power-limiting section how you plan on limiting his demon form, how it'd be different in the setting of Landel's, etc.

Hope that helps!
vinesofregret: Cho Hakkai from Saiyuki (Default)

[personal profile] vinesofregret 2011-05-01 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
That does, thanks! And yeah, definitely stripping down his powers - but the youkai appearance is a good reminder of all the terrible things he's done ;)

[identity profile] blind-nights.livejournal.com 2011-05-25 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I know there was something said about there being repercussions for their use in the future, but I'm not really sure what the rules for ring use are at the moment. I was wondering about teleporting to Doyleton: what would the town look like? Are there monsters? Could the character loot buildings or even leave the boundary of the town?

At least, I never found anything that laid out any of that information, sorry if I'm being redundant. X|

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The town would look much like it did during the zombie event, all run down and messed up. There would be a few stray zombies around, but not nearly as many as there was on the event night. The characters are able to loot buildings, yes! And as for leaving the town, I'm not quite sure how that would work, so I might have to get back to you on that bit.

[identity profile] blind-nights.livejournal.com 2011-05-31 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
For sure, that would be helpful to know! Thanks for the rest of the info. And just to clarify if someone didn't have a ring--would it still be possible to reach Doyleton by foot?

Hey, here I am again, still interested in applying and with more questions! Hope that's alright. :'D

If a character has an ability of more or less complete regeneration, but not much other than that, how much should it be nerfed for Landel's?

If a character is very unlikely to keep a diary at all, could staff's influence be applied? Like insisting it's a part of therapy or something.

Can a journal used in another (but comm-based) game be used?

Thanks! :'D

[personal profile] scarefaux 2011-06-30 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Not a mod, but I think I can help answer a couple of these questions.

I'm not sure what character you're wanting to app, but we have a Claire from Heroes ([livejournal.com profile] autophoenix) who has regenerative powers. You might try taking a look at her app to give you an idea on how much to tweak the ones for your character. If nothing else, it might put you in the ballpark.

And we currently have a few players who use journals that are currently in other games, both community- and journal-based, so that should be fine.

I hope that helps!

Well, that'd likely be Kanda from D.Gray-Man here. I'll check it out, then! I'd like to keep at least some of it but I don't want to push it, so an example is awesome.

And oh, that's good to hear~

Yes it does, thank you very much!

[identity profile] dork-at-duty.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Also not a mod, but I think I can address your question about forcing characters to use journals when they otherwise wouldn't. XD From what I've observed, most characters don't actually use their journals for anything other than just taking notes (if even that). I'd say that if you actually want to force your character to use their journal for the purposes of character development, then having the staff compel them to do it sounds like a good way to do it. XD Otherwise, if it's not IC for your character, then you don't really need to worry about it. (I recall this being addressed somewhere but not sure where exactly.)

If you're talking about the first person sample for the app, however, I think that can be handwaved by explaining that your character wouldn't write in their journal ICly (that's explained in the application guidelines, IIRC). But if you want to go the extra mile and show that you have a good grasp of your character's voice, you can write up a mock bulletin board post, just something that they would ICly post to the board for other characters to respond to. That's what I and a few other players did... Just a caveat that I did ask for permission on this before doing so, so I'm not sure if you'd need to ask the mods for permission, but if you want to go this route, you might want to ask anyway just to be on the safe side.

Disclaimer: I am not a mod, and all above statements are subject to being superseded by an actual mod.

Hmm, I guess that would make sense - and I wasn't aware they could just do notes. I'll ask the mods when I actually get down to starting an app - right now I'm going on vacation. |D;;

Thank you very much for your help!

Biography Length Question

[identity profile] isca.livejournal.com 2011-07-08 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello!

I'm currently working on an application for Princess Peach from the Super Mario Brothers Universe and I have a question.

I've hit the 3000 word barrier and it is a good place to have her enter this facility. It's the end of Super Mario RPG, she's fresh from battle and adventuring and reluctant to return to being a regular princess. However, if I kept her history going and reached a further point in canon she would be older, and more of a nurturing, almost motherly figure.

Would having the younger version of Peach be a better fit for this game, or may I go beyond the 3000 words and continue her character growth?

I did try to condense things down, but each time she's kidnapped the situation between she, Mario and ESPECIALLY Bowser change very drastically and they really can't be shortened. Every kidnapping is just so different from the previous.

H-hi! *nervous wave!*

I would very much like to apply to play a character in your lovely game. I have wanted to for quite some time, however I am a little intimidated by all of the things that need to be known. I am having a lot of trouble understanding the movement rules (detailed here http://damned-info.livejournal.com/13209.html ).

I have a disability that causes me to have a hard time concentrating for long periods of time, and on top of that I am not very tec-savvy. If someone could come onto aim with me and explain it in very simple terms, I'm sure that would help.

It's embarrassing to ask, but the game looks really fun and I would really like to play. Sorry for the repeat, I wasn't sure where I should be asking this ^^;;

Hi there! Not a mod, but I might be able to clear up some things about the movement system.

Basically, they only come into play during the NightShift (though if you have your character move to a different location during a single shift in the day, people tend to use them there too). Your character starts out in whatever room they're assigned, and you follow the map hallway by hallway, posting a comment to the appropriate post for said hallway, or you make the post if the hallway isn't already posted, but it's perfectly fine to let others post hallways on your first few nights to get the hang of it. We have a community that lists all of the hallways and links to their corresponding posts per night, so it's not too hard to find the correct post.

I'll use one of my characters as an example. Guybrush is in room M85, so I found the correct hallway (M81-90) and posted a comment for him to start. Then I went to the next hallway according to the first floor map (in this case, M-C Block Hallway) and made a comment there, as he's walking from one place to the next, like a board game. Then I went back to the first room and linked them together with another comment, which I put as a reply to the first one where he was just leaving his room.

You just repeat the process until you get to where you need to go. It's kind of tricky at first, but it's easy once you get the hang of it, and it makes sense as your character is logically traveling from one location to another and would see various sights along the way. After your character has been around for a while, you can generally skip some of the first few hallways to speed things up.

I hope that didn't make you more confused! Let me know if there are any more questions, and I'll do my best to answer them.

[identity profile] luvslunartears.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much, that helped indeed :)

It makes sense when you put it like that, but I read something about the "link" thing that appears under your user name in the subject line of a comment-- what's the significance of that? That's part of what is confusing me, too ^^;;

Also, this is a very unique way to play; most comms just use logs instead of tracking movement so closely like this. Do you know why it is done this way? I think knowing that might help me understand, too ^^;;

Thanks for the help!! :)

[personal profile] scarefaux 2011-11-04 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Same player as above- sorry for being so slow to get back to this. Got sick and disappeared for a few days.

I think what they're talking about with the "link" thing is this:

It's the url for that specific comment. When making the little [To here] and [From here] comments that link your posts together so people can literally "follow" your character from location to location, it's easiest to use that link. I usually just right-click it, "Copy Link Location," and use it for the To/From link.

And it definitely is pretty unique, from what I've seen on LJ. I'm not sure of the exact reason it's done this way, other than to keep up with the very linear structure of time in that Damned follows. Every patient starts in their room as opposed to just being able to jump to wherever to start a log. It keeps things organized if there's only one post in the community per room, and people can enter and leave said room via comments.

No problem! I'll try to clarify anything else that is confusing. Like I said, the playstyle does take some getting used to, but I've found it really does work extremely well for the game, and isn't so bad once you dive in and give it a shot.

[identity profile] luvslunartears.livejournal.com 2011-11-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooooooh! *little light goes on in head* I get it!! For some reason I was thinking you had to do something special to make that "link" thing take you to where your character went to.

So its just how to link to your previous comment (and location) directly, rather than linking to the post (and location) your comment was in.

I think I understand now ^^;; Thank you for taking the time to explain to me :) Much appreciated! Now all I must do is wait and see if I am accepted!! Feels like I applied forever ago xDDD
