Frequently Asked Questions

F.A.Q.
If I'm not officially accepted yet, what am I allowed to do in the OOC communities?
You are perfectly welcome to ask questions or comment to posts in [community profile] damned_lounge even if you haven't been accepted yet. However, we do not allow potential players to post with journals for characters who have not officially been accepted, and unless otherwise noted, non-players may not vote in any of the administrative polls.

As a potential applicant, what is the best way to contact a mod if I have questions about my application?
We prefer to be emailed at damned.mods[at]gmail[dot]com so that we have a record of the question and having answered it. Leaving a comment on this post is also fine, if you don't mind the question being public.

I've submitted an application, but it's been a while and I haven't heard back. What should I do?
We do our best to list the status of applications in our inbox over here. However, sometimes we do fall behind. If it's been a week and you haven't received a response, please feel free to contact one of the mods (on plurk, with a DW PM, etc.) to inquire about your application status.

H-hi! *nervous wave!*

I would very much like to apply to play a character in your lovely game. I have wanted to for quite some time, however I am a little intimidated by all of the things that need to be known. I am having a lot of trouble understanding the movement rules (detailed here http://damned-info.livejournal.com/13209.html ).

I have a disability that causes me to have a hard time concentrating for long periods of time, and on top of that I am not very tec-savvy. If someone could come onto aim with me and explain it in very simple terms, I'm sure that would help.

It's embarrassing to ask, but the game looks really fun and I would really like to play. Sorry for the repeat, I wasn't sure where I should be asking this ^^;;

Hi there! Not a mod, but I might be able to clear up some things about the movement system.

Basically, they only come into play during the NightShift (though if you have your character move to a different location during a single shift in the day, people tend to use them there too). Your character starts out in whatever room they're assigned, and you follow the map hallway by hallway, posting a comment to the appropriate post for said hallway, or you make the post if the hallway isn't already posted, but it's perfectly fine to let others post hallways on your first few nights to get the hang of it. We have a community that lists all of the hallways and links to their corresponding posts per night, so it's not too hard to find the correct post.

I'll use one of my characters as an example. Guybrush is in room M85, so I found the correct hallway (M81-90) and posted a comment for him to start. Then I went to the next hallway according to the first floor map (in this case, M-C Block Hallway) and made a comment there, as he's walking from one place to the next, like a board game. Then I went back to the first room and linked them together with another comment, which I put as a reply to the first one where he was just leaving his room.

You just repeat the process until you get to where you need to go. It's kind of tricky at first, but it's easy once you get the hang of it, and it makes sense as your character is logically traveling from one location to another and would see various sights along the way. After your character has been around for a while, you can generally skip some of the first few hallways to speed things up.

I hope that didn't make you more confused! Let me know if there are any more questions, and I'll do my best to answer them.

Thank you very much, that helped indeed :)

It makes sense when you put it like that, but I read something about the "link" thing that appears under your user name in the subject line of a comment-- what's the significance of that? That's part of what is confusing me, too ^^;;

Also, this is a very unique way to play; most comms just use logs instead of tracking movement so closely like this. Do you know why it is done this way? I think knowing that might help me understand, too ^^;;

Thanks for the help!! :)

Same player as above- sorry for being so slow to get back to this. Got sick and disappeared for a few days.

I think what they're talking about with the "link" thing is this:

It's the url for that specific comment. When making the little [To here] and [From here] comments that link your posts together so people can literally "follow" your character from location to location, it's easiest to use that link. I usually just right-click it, "Copy Link Location," and use it for the To/From link.

And it definitely is pretty unique, from what I've seen on LJ. I'm not sure of the exact reason it's done this way, other than to keep up with the very linear structure of time in that Damned follows. Every patient starts in their room as opposed to just being able to jump to wherever to start a log. It keeps things organized if there's only one post in the community per room, and people can enter and leave said room via comments.

No problem! I'll try to clarify anything else that is confusing. Like I said, the playstyle does take some getting used to, but I've found it really does work extremely well for the game, and isn't so bad once you dive in and give it a shot.

Ooooooooh! *little light goes on in head* I get it!! For some reason I was thinking you had to do something special to make that "link" thing take you to where your character went to.

So its just how to link to your previous comment (and location) directly, rather than linking to the post (and location) your comment was in.

I think I understand now ^^;; Thank you for taking the time to explain to me :) Much appreciated! Now all I must do is wait and see if I am accepted!! Feels like I applied forever ago xDDD

No worries! Like I said, I know the explanations of the system can get a little wordy. It's really not too hard once you actually try it for yourself, but I'm someone who learns a lot more through doing something than reading about it.

Good luck with the application, and I hope we see you around! ♥
