If I'm not officially accepted yet, what am I allowed to do in the OOC communities? You are perfectly welcome to ask questions or comment to posts in damned_lounge even if you haven't been accepted yet. However, we do not allow potential players to post with journals for characters who have not officially been accepted, and unless otherwise noted, non-players may not vote in any of the administrative polls.
As a potential applicant, what is the best way to contact a mod if I have questions about my application? We prefer to be emailed at damned.mods[at]gmail[dot]com so that we have a record of the question and having answered it. Leaving a comment on this post is also fine, if you don't mind the question being public.
I've submitted an application, but it's been a while and I haven't heard back. What should I do? We do our best to list the status of applications in our inbox over here. However, sometimes we do fall behind. If it's been a week and you haven't received a response, please feel free to contact one of the mods (on plurk, with a DW PM, etc.) to inquire about your application status.

I know this is a little pre-emptive, but I was wondering if there were additional information on what doctor applications are supposed to look like. I couldn't really find much information about their role.. like to what extent they worked for the institute, what they were supposed to accomplish (if anything), and how often the person playing them would play them. I read that doctors had a bit more freedom given to them recently, but that was about it.
The doctors are actually being brainwashed by the institute, so they think that they're working there voluntarily. What they do isn't all that much in the grand scheme of things, other than to give the patients the illusion that this is a proper mental hospital that is meant to help people get better. Some of the doctors aren't even all that good at this, since we have a few immoral or even evil types. So long as they're able to present a nice face, though, it doesn't really matter too much. As for how often, there are therapy days on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in-game. With how slow time moves, this means that therapy doesn't come around all that often. However, there is an option to post them out of therapy sometimes, such as with the other doctors at the staff lunch tables or during the Doyleton trip.
Forgive me if this has been asked and answered already, but.
I'm hoping to app next cycle, but I know for a fact that I'll have no internet access from the 2nd until the 9th of April. Is it okay to have somebody else send my app in for me?
Oh, gosh, this is so long-winded, I'm sorry. I'm considering apping come this next cycle, but the character's a bit... tricky. I just wanted to cover all my bases. I'm not sure how familiar any of the mod team is with Nabari no Ou, so I figured I'd explain it the best I could, just in case.
Yoite utilizes this skill called "kira," which is a forbidden knowledge of kinjitsu in this canon. He's... pretty much the only person in the world who uses it, because it's insane to even consider doing so. Essentially, it focuses the user's lifeforce, injecting it into the victim's body and allowing the user to manipulate the other person's ki. This can lead from everything to broken bones to ruptured organs, lacerations, anything, so long as it starts as internalized, and depending on how much lifeforce the user employs.
However, this obviously comes with some consequences, since, you know, crazy bitches is using they own LIFE to kill other people. It fucks up the ki in the user's body, sometimes warping physical properties - for instance, Yoite didn't experience any symptoms of puberty until he was sixteen, and when he did, all of his growth was contained in a space of three days rather than over a few years as it normally should. It causes deterioration when used enough. He's basically falling apart - organ failure, hair falling out, hands and feet are dusky with gangrene and rot, etc etc.
From the earliest in canon I can take him from while having any sort of actual canon to work with, Yoite only has a couple months to live. Four or so by the beginning of it. From the point I want to take him from, it's more like two or three, tops. Which is fine in a contained little manga, of course, but it makes for pretty... weird RP. So, here's where the other questions come in: (FINALLY, I know.)
a) Is there any way this could be reasonably handled, a character having... well, what's essentially a fatal disease? It would be a bit more difficult to convince him that he's not from his world when, well, the proof is in the pudding - his hands are all blackened. Perhaps chalked up to some other illness, some life-threatening one that has similar symptoms to what he's experiencing, or...? Some kind of cure timeline? I'm obviously not looking for advice on how to play the character, just wondering what your standpoint would be ^^ I'm open to suggestion.
b) Totally unrelated, but on the subject of names, he was born with a different name than he has now. He has a sort of disjointed way of viewing his past, some kind of a mental block on it. The details are sort of fuzzy, it seems, and he gets very confused when he talks about it, talking about his past self as if it's a different person entirely sometimes. Would it be okay if I used his birth name as the "real name," as he doesn't even consider it his own, or would I come up with a handy dandy new one? Either way's fine with me!
a) We've actually had characters in similar terminally ill situations before, so you definitely have a few options on this! One is to keep the illness as bad as usual and have the nurses explain it away through a more realistic disease; another is to have him start off sick and then be administered medicine/treatment daily that would slowly begin to cure him; the last and probably easiest would be for him to wake up at Landel's with a totally good-as-new (or at least significantly more healthy) body and then be rid of the disease completely.
b) We think it's okay for you to use his old name, since it seems like an alter-ego kind of thing and we're more lenient with that stuff these days than we've been in the past.
Hope that helps and if you need any more clarification, don't hesitate to ask! \o/
Wait... so if you use the Admin Console to add journals to your Friends list, it won't properly account for renamed journals? *Tests this* Holy shit, you're right! 0_0 I have "sharpfingersnap" (my character's old username) redirected to "perfectrecord," so the Admin Console should translate it thusly... but it doesn't. (It just says something about an "inactive journal.") Methinks a report to LiveJournal Support about this issue is in order because that behavior is just not right. ETA: Support request opened here!
Also... while I'm at it, a note to the mods: since we're on the subject of the Friend Add lists, would it be possible to maybe merge the first and second Friend Add text entry boxes together into a single one (and maybe still leaving the third one as is)? Because of the number of recent drops of older characters, both of the lists have gotten small enough to combine them and it still wouldn't come anywhere near exceeding the daily Friend Add limit (which I think is set to 200).
Hello! I've got a question pertaining to a character I'm looking to app... it isn't something I need to finish his application, but it's something I would like to be able to know when it comes down to actually playing him if he gets accepted.
The character in question is basically intersexed (though he wasn't born that way) and binds his chest to continue looking male. Is that something he'd feasibly be able to keep doing in-game? Either way is fine, but for characterization reasons it's something I'd like to know one way or the other on.
Standard not-a-mod warning here, but just from a player perspective...
I don't see a reason why that wouldn't be okay, though probably you'd have to work out the particulars of how the staff treats him with the mods. In answering previous question about an intersexed character, a mod said that the player just needed to choose a sex for them to be officially treated as by the institute, for the sake of rooming, showers, etc.
The common practice for anything weird (like unnatural eye/hair colour) is for the hospital staff to just ignore it, but in this case it is a real condition, so you could probably go either way. I think binding his chest is similar to other (somewhat somewhat health- somewhat vanity-related) things characters have been allowed, like eyepatches, or a prosthetic claw for a missing hand (in one case, the personal posessions rule was bent to allow a character to keep his headphones and music player, because they're important to his characterization).
I'm thinking (as I mentioned in the lounge at least once) of apping a non-sentient NS antagonist -- is this generally something worth doing? (I know spots are limited, so if it'd just get rejected in favor of sentient NS characters, I won't bother.)
Also, the character in question tends only to be seen outdoors in canon -- would it be acceptable to always select outdoor slots?
I have a question: I know there is someone here who already plays Leonard McCoy from the original series, so would the reboot Bones not be accepted since they are essentially the same character?
That's a tough question, since we know there's a Reboot canon precedent for XI characters coexisting with their Prime counterparts, but... due to logistics issues and how it'd severely impact current players, it's probably best if we say no on that happening within the realm of the RP itself. ;; We're really sorry about that!
I know the application guidelines say that if you reapply for a character you previously dropped, they can retain their memories of being in Landel's before. Is that only if you take them from the same canon point as before, or can it still apply if they come from a later point?
An example for clarity (hopefully): Billy Bob was taken from May 5, 2009, in his canon. Billy Bob stayed at Landel's for two weeks before he was dropped and disappeared. In reapplying for Billy Bob, does his canon point need to remain May 5, 2009, or can he be "updated" to, say, February 2010, as if he went back to his canon world when he disappeared from Landel's? And if updating is possible in conjunction with memory retention, would it be assumed that Billy Bob forgot about Landel's when he was back in his canon and only remembered upon arriving again?
We've actually had someone ask us this before, but due to the logistics of it and the way patient disappearances work in the game, we don't think we can allow it. :( Sorry about that!
Are multiple versions of the Doctor (from Doctor Who) accepted here? By which I mean: I know you've got a Ten running around the halls already, but could I conceivably apply for Eleven or Nine or what-have-you?
Since they do have the same history and (generally) the same set of memories, we count all versions of the Doctor as the same character and don't allow duplicates. :( Sorry!
Oh man, I apologize for being a bother! This is going to be annoyingly technical.
Regarding the Arts & Crafts Room: the room description does not specifically say what sort of materials are available for sewing, except that scissors are barely sharp enough to cut paper. "Dolores's" comment (http://community.livejournal.com/damned_bulletin/702692.html?thread=18417124#t18417124) on the suggestion post implies that the fabric is also no good, and needles substandard.
What I'd like to know is: a) what are the specific supplies (orz, sorry!! but like... thread, etc), b) are things that bad, c) can better supplies be accessed on request with, idk, supervision, and d) are patients allowed to modify their uniforms in small ways? Like, stitching a symbol on a sleeve, or something like that?
On an unrelated note, would it be permissible to post to the lounge gauging the "spirit power" of the characters? To know if Uryuu would be able to sense something, and also, if/when he pulls out his bow, if xy or z would be able to see it.
So, generally the supplies are pretty bad, but if Ishida were to question a nurse about it, she would probably tell him that he could be given good supplies (proper scissors for cutting fabric, good needle/thread, etc.) if he remained on good behavior -- but even then, they would only let him use it under supervision.
As for sewing stuff onto clothes, the nurses wouldn't allow it. It would be feasible for him to go into A&C at night and steal the sewing supplies and then work on modifying his uniform in his room, but he'd only be able to wear it at night - if he tried it during the day he'd be forced to change and they'd probably dispose of the modified clothing. :(
Also, we're actually trying to avoid those lounge posts as much as we can these days. Sorry, it's just that it seems like since it's a situational thing, it might be easier to just ask your thread mates in the even that it comes up. I hope that makes sense!
Hi, I'm looking to app for the first time in this next app cycle.
The personal history of the character I want to app is kind of hilariously complex, and it only gets worse past the point in canon I want to take them from. Would I have to write out what happens to them in their canon after this point, even though it doesn't have an effect on them?
I'm a potential apper who already asked this question on rpanoncomm, and wanted to get a mods opinion on apping a character from a long ways before canon starts.
So, I would like to play a character who is an adult in canon, but play him pre-canon (when he's 12-13). There is a (very short ~2-page) flashback of him at this age, and this flashback is there to show the reader characterization points, how his thought process worked/works, and also show how little he's changed over the 18+ years between the flashback and current canon.
I'd like to play him from this age because there is evidence that show how his characterization has changed over the years with regard to interactions with people and self-control.
I'm wondering if this is even a viable option, since I would want to take him from nearly 18 years pre-canon. The character in question is Stein from Soul Eater, if this helps any.
Hmm... we have allowed adult characters to be taken from their childhood, (such as Kakashi from Naruto and Nigredo/Albedo from Xenosaga), but in both cases, the characters had extended canon from their early lives and the applicants therefore had no problem with giving us a comprehensive history and personality. Unfortunately, from what you describe, I'm not sure that your character meets that criteria, so I'm skeptical as to whether we'd be able to accept it on that basis. Of course, you can still send in an app and if it does an excellent job showing us your handle on the character, we might reconsider; if we still don't feel comfortable accepting your application and reject in on the basis of limited canon, we would let you know and you would still have a chance to send in a new application during the same application cycle (for a different character or for that same character from a different point in time).
I hope that answers your question and I apologize for any disappointing news! D8
Potential applicant here, with a question about fanon.
How much, if any, fanon is acceptable in apps here? For example... I want to play a character whose story begins when he's about 20. His childhood is referenced, but there are never any specifics given about where he lived. It would be complete fanon for me to claim that he was born in one town or another, or to talk about his schooling. Would it be acceptable to draw on what little canon is given about his past and make logical inferences, or would you prefer that only canon fact be included in this app?
It's all right to make a few educational guesses if you explain how you're making them! We just don't want there to be any major assumptions to be made, so fill in the blanks where you need to (and make sure to note what is fanon and what is clearly stated in canon).
I was wondering about something regarding canon points for apping. The point I would like to app from in canon is a brief thing in the latest chapter when it timeskips forward an unknown amount of time. There is a good chance the timeskip will be covered in chapters to come to explain what happened (she kind of has to). As such I'd have to be very careful to dance around what happened in that interim and but headcanon is inevitable. It was a massive shift for the character.
HOWEVER... I would dearly lovely to apply from that point in canon because it's brilliant and kind of perfect for Damned's setting. It would also make the character a lot easier to integrate. He's the sort to smash himself bloody trying to get out otherwise, which... is very annoying to play with in the long term.
Obviously as new chapters come out and explain what happened/is happening to him I'd incorporate it. :3 I'm used to dancing the line with this character and guessing what's happening, since the author loves being insanely vague, while minimizing risk of retcon. I'm just wondering if that's allowed/if I should do extra in the app to address that?
A-ah, and... his history is insanely long and complicated. I've already written a wiki for him, but it's beyond the 3k limit (by a fair chunk... but written entertainingly!). Is it best to do a condensed summary (it's summarizing an entire series essentially, geh) and just link my wiki to show I'm not a dunce and overlooking things...?
I just have a quick little question! I have an issue similar to the one the Allen player had, with the wiki being waaay over 3k words. While I have, like, forever until the next app cycle, just wanted to know if it was okay to leave it as it is, or if I should work on creating a summary for it...
Right now, its at about 7.7k words, and I know that's WAY over what you guys wanted, but I've combed through it about four times in the past few weeks, and that's as low as I'm comfortable with getting it, as cutting out any more seems to be just glancing over certain points that are relevant to both the plot and explaining exactly what the character goes through during the course of the game.
It's Ventus from Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, by the way 8D; which, while a slightly "shorter" game, still requires like, twelve hours of gameplay per story, and each story if full of cutscenes that are extremely interconnected with a whole chunk of plot shoved into a short time frame. I've tried to rewrite it as a short, condensed little summary, but I just feel like it doesn't showcase my writing or the character as much as I'd like.
If an allowance could be granted, that would be awesome :D If not, I'll try my best to get it down!
We'd appreciate any bit that you can cut it down, but we understand how hard it is to be concise at times, and so if you're unable to, then it's fine to send it in as is (now that you've let us know ahead of time). There's a chance your app might get processed late because of the length, but we'll still read it!
On the community profile it says the applications for regular patients closed on December 11th, and I was just wondering when they would next open up. Do you have a date set yet? In any case, would it be alright for me to send in my application ahead of time and wait for the next application period to come up for being accepted/rejected/etc or should I ~stay tuned~ until they open up again?
We're probably going to have the next open-app date around February 15th -- and just so you know, we're also planning to test out open apps for a while. In any case, we'd prefer that you send your application in when apps are officially open, if that's all right!
Just one quick question-- what is your policy on canon updates? Because I know there's a new movie in develpoment for Leon and I would hate to get him situated here and then have him be out of date. Granted, it's probably not going to change his personality much, but...
We currently don't have a system in place save for using your M-U to canon update your character, though we have considered instating a system specifically to do that since there are some people who've mentioned wanting to do it. It's not for sure, but it's possible?
I'm planning on apping at some point this cycle but I think I'm just a little confused at how the game works. Sorry, I'm so dumb. My brain may just be frazzled from midterms but I keep reading through the links and I'm not seeing anything about these.
1. It says adding the character journals are optional. Why? What goes there? It sounds like everything is already taken care of in the comms
2. What's your policy on using an account already active at another game?
Wait never mind! I just found the info about the journals.
but something I haven't been able to find still is what's this "Real" name stuff? What's the point of it? and where does it come from? other than "I made it up! :D"
Bugrit buggrit buggrit millennium hand and shrimp I told 'em preview, I told 'em! Which is to say, I accidentally pressed submit instead of preview, sorry, here is the rest of the question:
I'm considering apping a character that canonically speaks LIKE THIS, and was wondering if I would still be allowed to use that format when they speak, at least during nightshift?
Potential applicant here (considering Crona from Soul Eater) with two questions.
1. What is the policy on two characters that share a body? In Crona and Ragnarok's case, it's more "magically conjoined twins" than possession.
2. What is the policy on characters who have not (and most likely will not) have their sex revealed in their canon? Crona is essentially genderless mentally, and I would prefer not to have to pick a sex.
Not a mod, but hopefully I can give you a player perspective in the meantime...
Regarding Crona and Ragnarok, I can't say for sure if you're allowed to app them both as a single entity, but if you are able to app them both, one of the things to keep in mind is that for dayshift, the patients are supposed to be normal people, so while Crona and Ragnarok could still share a body, Ragnarok couldn't necessarily emerge during the day, since it wouldn't be "normal". At night, though, I'm sure he can come out and do his thing with appropriate power restrictions and whatnot.
Regarding your second question, I'm pretty sure there's been questions about characters with sort of vague genders before. I think the consensus thus far is that you do need to pick a gender for the sake of determining how the staff will treat them re: showers, dorms, etc. as the Institute is divided ICly between male and female blocks. Doesn't mean that you need to play Crona as the gender you pick, though. It might be helpful also to look at the responses here (http://damned-info.livejournal.com/14653.html?thread=326973#t326973), although I know that the case is not the same as Crona's.
orz hope this helped...! It's quite late, so I apologize for any rambling ;A;
I think I read through most of the comments and didn't see anything to answer my question, but if I missed it a thousand apologies. Also, doing my best not to spoil the game for people who haven't played the series so this might be unclear?
I'm considering applying as Heather Mason from Silent Hill 3, and in the game there are two possible endings. The first ending is considered 'canon' by most people since you get it on your first playthrough no matter what, and the second is only attainable after completing a few extra challenges. Would it be acceptable for me to use the second ending when applying? It does drastically change her personality, which I can explain further if you'd like. I guess I'm just wondering how you define AU characters, since I know some games don't allow it. Is it okay so long as the AU is official?
If we could get some more info about how different the second ending is, that would be helpful (we aren't scared of spoilers), though from what we're reading here, it sounds like it'd be fine!
Hello, me and my friend are interested in joining this game at some point, and we would like to ask about the nature of activity requirements. It was said that there needs to be a post around every two weeks; we were wondering if the same post can count for two or more characters if it's, well, interactive? Or would it count only for the one that makes the first post itself?
The two week rules counts for each character. Looking at an Activity Check post (http://community.livejournal.com/damned_lounge/2455517.html) might help you understand it better, but if you have any further questions then please ask!
